Ivan is true heirloom garlic. It was made known to the public in 2011 by Canadian Mr. McIlroy, who said it had been grown for generations by his family in Ontario. He received his original seed stock from his mother. He showed it to many garlic experts but no one has been able to identify his variety with any other. It is truly a unique garlic. Believed to be a Porcelain garlic, Ivan has enough unique characteristics to make its classification uncertain. What is known for certain is that its robust growth pattern and fantastic flavor are winning friends wherever it goes. Our grower reports success as far south as Texas with this hardneck garlic! Ivan produces very large bulbs with white outer wrappers and delicately purple inner wrappers. It has performed well here in our test garden in central Arkansas, and is one our favorites for flavor as well. Ivan has a long storage life for a hardneck, making it an excellent choice for southern growers.
